Underwater scenes often look effortless on screen. On set, they are anything but. Every adjustment competes with limited breath-hold time, water resistance, restricted visibility, and the simple fact that a director above the surface cannot speak normally to a camera operator below it.

During the underwater production of vivo S60's Starlight Luggage (《星光行囊》), director Li Zitao used DIVEVOLK SeaLink to turn that fragmented process into a real-time workflow. The crew could monitor the pool scene, communicate adjustments, and respond to new ideas without repeatedly stopping the shoot for another surface briefing.

The Hidden Bottleneck in Underwater Direction

Li had already worked around underwater cameras before this production, so he understood where the time disappears. Without a live communication layer, a team may discuss a shot on deck, descend, attempt the movement, return to the surface, review what happened, and then repeat the entire cycle.

“If we did not have this communication system, we would have had to keep getting in the water, coming back up to talk, and going down again,” Li said in a post-shoot interview. “In open water, the time and physical effort would only increase.”

The pool sequence added another constraint: the performer was working on breath-hold and could generally stay underwater for only one to two minutes at a time. That short window had to contain the performance, the camera move, the timing, and any correction the director wanted to make.

Hand signals can cover familiar dive instructions, but they are not a complete language for choreography or cinematography. A note such as “turn later,” “change the camera path,” or “hold that moment before moving” is difficult to communicate precisely once the take is underway. SeaLink gave the production a way to keep the creative conversation active across the waterline.

From Four or Five Attempts to One or Two

The clearest measure of the workflow change was not a technical specification. It was the number of attempts needed to get a usable shot.

Li said that, under a traditional stop-and-brief process, a single underwater shot could require four or five attempts. With SeaLink supporting live communication, the team could often reach the intended result in one or two.

That difference matters because underwater production fatigue is cumulative. Every extra reset asks the performer and camera team to repeat a physically demanding sequence. Reducing unnecessary attempts protects energy for the takes that genuinely need refinement and gives the crew more time to improve the image rather than reconstruct the same communication loop.

When the Monitor Creates a New Idea

Real-time communication did more than preserve the shot list. It also gave Li room to respond to what appeared on the monitor.

Most performer movements were designed in advance, while Li concentrated on camera position and movement. But underwater light, fabric, bubbles, and bodies do not always behave exactly as expected. A frame can suddenly reveal a stronger angle than the storyboard anticipated.

Li recalled seeing moments that prompted immediate instructions such as: “Push in, circle from a low angle.” Instead of waiting for the operator to surface, he could relay the adjustment while the visual idea was still fresh and the setup was still in place.

“It became a process of seeing, thinking, and speaking immediately,” he said. “That kind of creative rhythm and freedom was almost impossible in my previous underwater shoots.”

How a Connected Underwater Production Workflow Looks

SeaLink did not replace pre-production. The team still needed a clear scene plan, rehearsed performer movement, camera preparation, and trained water-safety support. What changed was the gap between direction and execution.

  1. Plan the take on deck. The director, performer, and camera team agree on the movement, framing, and stopping conditions before anyone enters the water.
  2. Establish the underwater connection. The SeaLink production system connects the underwater smartphone terminal with the surface-side workflow.
  3. Monitor the frame in real time. The director watches the image instead of waiting until the team returns to review it.
  4. Call precise adjustments. Camera direction can be changed while the visual problem or opportunity is still visible.

After the shoot, Li said real-time underwater communication would become a priority for future projects. He also saw potential for using a smartphone as part of more flexible monitoring and shooting setups when the scene called for it.
