Dive Log Template: Make Underwater Observations Useful

Most dive logs are written for memory: where you went, how deep you were, how long the dive lasted, and what you saw. That is already valuable. But with a clear template, a dive log can become easier to search, compare, and reuse later.

Here, the focus is narrower: which fields should go into your personal log so the record still makes sense months or years later.

What Makes a Dive Log Useful Beyond Memory?

A useful observation answers six questions: what, where, when, how many, under what conditions, and how sure are you? A blurry note that says "lots of fish" is a memory. A note that says "approximately 40 schooling jacks at 18 meters on the north wall, moderate current, 20-meter visibility, photo attached" is much more informative.

Consistency is the point. A personal log does not become formal research by being detailed, but it can become easier to check against photos, share with an instructor, compare with later dives, or submit to a project if the observation fits that project's rules.

Field 1: Location That Can Be Understood Later

Write the dive site name, region, country, operator if useful, and GPS point when available. If the site has multiple moorings or reefs, include the exact entry point or route. "Blue Corner" might be enough for you today, but not for someone comparing records years from now.

Field 2: Time, Depth, and Conditions

Date, local time, maximum depth, depth range of the observation, water temperature, visibility, current, surge, weather, and habitat type all add context. A species seen at 5 meters on a sunny seagrass bed is a different record from one seen at 32 meters on a current-swept wall.

Field 3: Species, Count, and Confidence

Record the species if you know it. If not, record the best group and mark uncertainty. "Possible juvenile barracuda" is better than a confident wrong ID. Add count ranges when exact counts are impossible: single, pair, 3-10, 10-50, 50-plus, or the project's preferred categories.

REEF's Volunteer Fish Survey Project is built around trained recreational divers and snorkelers reporting marine life observations. iNaturalist can also help with photo-based identification and open-data sharing. In both cases, good photos and honest uncertainty improve the record.

Field 4: Behavior and Habitat

Behavior can be more useful than presence alone. Was the animal feeding, cleaning, mating, schooling, hiding, resting, or fleeing? Was it in coral rubble, sand, seagrass, open water, a wreck, a cave entrance, or a cleaning station?

Do not create behavior to get a better record. No touching, poking, chasing, feeding, blocking, or moving animals. The best observation is the one that shows what the animal was doing before you interfered.

Field 5: Human Impact

Marine debris, fishing line, anchor damage, broken coral, bleaching, sediment, and ghost gear can all belong in a log when recorded carefully. If you find debris that is heavy, sharp, contaminated, or entangled with marine life, do not make removal the default. Mark it, photograph it when safe, tell the operator, and follow the correct local process. Our ocean conservation guide and single-use plastic guide are good next reads.

Field 6: Photo or Video Evidence

A photo does not need to win awards to be useful. For ID, aim for sharpness, full body shape, distinctive markings, and scale. For habitat, step back enough to show context. For debris, include material and approximate size. If your camera settings are distracting you from the dive, simplify the setup.

Where to Share Data

Use the project that matches the observation. Fish and invertebrate surveys may fit REEF. General species photos may fit iNaturalist. Marine debris belongs in a debris-specific survey such as Dive Against Debris. For shark, ray, or other specialized observations, check whether a current, regionally appropriate reporting program exists before submitting. Local marine parks, universities, and NGOs may also have regional reporting channels.

Do not upload the same uncertain record everywhere with different names. That creates noise. Start with the most relevant project, follow its rules, and update the record if experts correct the ID.

A Simple Template for Your Next Dive

After your next dive, try this structure: site, date, time, depth range, temperature, visibility, current, habitat, species or subject, count, behavior, impact notes, photo reference, confidence level, and whether the record was submitted to a project.

That is enough to turn a normal log into a useful observation. Over a year, it can also show you how your favorite sites are changing.

The ocean does not need every diver to be a scientist. It needs more divers to be careful witnesses. A good dive log respects what you saw by making it understandable to someone else.
