Divers are bringing back images like this from ordinary recreational dives, and the question we hear most often is some version of: how close can a phone really get?

Close enough to fill the frame with a subject a few centimeters long — and it isn't a one-off. Working Distance: The Skill That Makes or Breaks Macro

A strong close-up lens doesn't focus everywhere. It creates a slim band of sharp focus a few centimeters in front of the glass — closer than that zone, blur; farther, blur. Finding that band quickly, without chasing the subject, is the core skill of phone macro.

Here's the motion that works. Get neutrally buoyant and stable first. Start with the lens clearly too far from the subject, then ease forward slowly — think fingertip speed — while watching the screen. The moment detail snaps in, stop. That's your working plane. Hold it with breath control rather than fin kicks: a gentle inhale backs you off a touch, a slow exhale brings you in.

Practice this on a patch of sand, a mooring line, or any nonliving texture before pointing it at an animal. Ten minutes of deliberate practice on dead substrate teaches your body where the focus band lives, and it spares the reef your learning curve.

Locking Focus on the Right Thing

Autofocus at macro distances will happily grab a particle in the water column or the sand behind your subject. Don't let it choose. Tap the screen directly on the detail that matters — the rhinophores on a nudibranch, the eye on a blenny — and use your camera app's AE/AF lock (on iPhone, press and hold the focus point) so the phone stops hunting while you fine-tune distance with your body.

One phone-specific habit worth building: recent iPhones can switch cameras automatically at close range. Behind a wet lens you generally want the phone to stay on the camera the lens is centered over, so learn where that control lives before the dive, not during it.

Light: Getting It Into a Very Small Gap

At macro working distances, your biggest lighting problem is geometry. The lens sits so close to the subject that the rig itself can shade the scene, and a light aimed straight ahead bounces off every particle between you and the subject as backscatter.

Bring the light in steep — from above or from the side at roughly 45 degrees — so the beam crosses the subject rather than the water column in front of the lens. A continuous video light is easier to learn with than strobes because you see the effect live on screen: move the light, watch the shadows shift, shoot when it looks right. If the front of the wet lens casts a shadow across the frame, raise the light and angle it down more sharply.

What Failure Looks Like — and the Quick Fix

  • Everything is soft, everywhere. You're outside the focus band. Reset: back off well beyond it and ease in again.
  • Sharp particles, blurry subject. Autofocus grabbed the water column. Tap the subject and lock focus.
  • One dark or smeared corner. The wet lens is off-center or a bubble is trapped. Fixable in ten seconds — but only if you check between shots.
  • Snowstorm of bright specks. Backscatter from flat lighting. Steepen the light angle.
  • Ghostly haze on every frame. Fog or a droplet inside the lens stack. Surface, dry, reseat.

Every macro shooter collects these failures. The difference between frustration and progress is recognizing which one you're looking at while you can still fix it.

Where a Phone Rig Reaches Its Limits

Honesty helps you more than hype here. A phone-and-housing rig has a ceiling, and knowing where it sits saves you disappointment:

  • Super macro. Subjects meaningfully smaller than a fingernail — skeleton shrimp, hairy shrimp eyes — push past what one wet lens and a phone sensor deliver cleanly. Dedicated rigs with stacked diopters and strobes still own that territory.
  • Very low light. Small sensors get noisy fast. Night dives and deep, dark sites demand more continuous light than daytime reef work, and even then the files show it.
  • Heavy cropping. A phone file that looks great full-frame on a screen has less reserve for aggressive crops or large prints than a larger sensor's file.
  • Fast, erratic subjects. The find-the-focus-band workflow rewards slow, deliberate subjects. Darting fish at close range will win most rounds.

Dive Skills and Reef Ethics Come First

The same goes for the animals. Approach slowly, leave the animal an exit, and end the encounter at the first sign of sustained stress. No photograph justifies repositioning a nudibranch or bracing a hand on coral — and a shot made that way isn't one to be proud of anyway.

How to Check Your Own Setup

Every phone, housing, and lens combination behaves a little differently, so spend one pool or shallow-water session measuring yours before a trip:

  1. Mount everything exactly as you'll dive it, and clear bubbles.
  2. Place a waterproof ruler or any fine-textured object on a nonliving surface.
  3. Start too far away and move in slowly until detail snaps in. Note the distance — then keep moving in until it blurs again. Those two points bracket your focus band.
  4. Take ten photos at the sweet spot, refocusing each time. If eight or more are sharp where you tapped, your setup and technique are dive-ready. If not, check lens centering and bubbles first, then slow your approach speed.
  5. Unscrew and remount the lens once and reshoot a frame or two — this catches seating and centering problems that only show up after a lens change.

Keep the misses alongside the keepers when you review. Failures tell you what to fix; a highlight reel doesn't.
