The chilling waters of Vladivostok recently played host to an extraordinary display of skill and courage as the 2024 International Underwater Ice Diving Competition, UNDERICE GAMES, successfully concluded on February 25th. Divers from across the globe converged for this unique event, marking its tenth anniversary. For DIVEVOLK, it was more than just a competition to support; it was an adventure alongside passionate ice diving enthusiasts, exploring the challenging beauty of the world beneath the ice!

Understanding the UNDERICE GAMES: A Unique Challenge

The UNDERICE GAMES stand alone as the world's only open competition focused on the demanding discipline of "Ice Orienteering." Originating in Russia, the event plays a crucial role in developing ice diving as a specialized direction within the sport, helping to amend standards and revise international safety requirements.

Beyond the competition, the event aims to foster diving as part of an active lifestyle, boost the tourist appeal of Russia and the Far East, and promote health and well-being. Diving, especially in such focused conditions, is even noted by psychologists for its potential benefits in overcoming stress and aiding physical recovery.

Over its 10-year history, the Games have seen over 250 divers brave the icy conditions, where water temperatures hover around a challenging 2°C (36°F) – similar to Arctic waters. Adding to the prestige, the 2021 Guinness World Record holder for the deepest dive (332 meters), Ahmed Gabr, served as the ambassador for this year's games.

DIVEVOLK Technology Tested in Extreme Cold

Ice diving is considered one of the most challenging forms of diving, placing extreme demands not only on the divers but also on their equipment. We were thrilled to see participants utilize the DIVEVOLK SeaTouch 4 Max housing, and its performance in these frigid conditions was outstanding.

Key capabilities shone through:

  • Reliable Touchscreen Functionality: Even in 2°C water, the patented full touchscreen remained responsive, allowing divers seamless access to their smartphone's camera and apps – crucial when dexterity is reduced by cold and thick gloves.
  • Robust Waterproofing: The 60-meter depth rating provided more than enough protection for the competition depths.
  • Button-Free Advantage: The lack of physical buttons eliminates potential freezing points and makes operation simpler, even with heavy gloves.
  • Full App Access: Divers could use their preferred camera apps, navigation tools (like the underwater compass function within apps), and importantly, communication tools at the surface or even type messages underwater if needed for specific tasks or emergencies.

Paramount attention was paid to safety throughout the event, and having reliable gear that allows access to safety-related apps and surface communication adds another layer of security in critical situations.
